Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)
Contracture prevention and energy preservation are daily work.
Educational reference only. The clinical considerations described on this page are educational summaries drawn solely from publicly available materials, including the linked advocacy organizations and the peer-reviewed literature. They are not a standard of care. They are not a substitute for the judgment of a licensed clinician evaluating the individual patient. Bridgepoint Therapies is a platform. It does not diagnose, treat, or cure any disease.
Why this page exists
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy demands a highly specific approach to exercise, where standard clinical techniques like eccentric loading can accelerate muscle fiber breakdown. Bridgepoint is establishing routing standards to ensure that matched clinicians are trained in Duchenne-specific stretching protocols, avoiding muscle damage while preserving joint mobility.
Clinical Scopes
Clinical considerations by discipline
Physical Therapy
Daily low load passive stretching of the multi-joint muscle groups most prone to contracture, particularly Achilles, hamstrings, and IT bands. Submaximal aerobic conditioning. Strict avoidance of eccentric loading, which is understood to accelerate muscle necrosis in DMD.
Occupational Therapy
Night splint fabrication for the resting hand and ankle. Upper extremity energy conservation. Progressive power mobility controls as proximal muscle strength changes.
Speech Therapy
Respiratory phonatory coordination. Vocal volume work. Later-stage pharyngeal swallowing support as intercostal and diaphragm endurance decreases.
Delivery Frameworks
Care delivery fit
In the home or facility
Home visits handle nightly stretching, splint fitting, and positioning checks without adding travel-related fatigue on top of an already fatiguing condition.
Virtual / Telehealth
Telehealth is used to coach caregivers and aides through nightly routines and positioning checks.

Where We Are Today
Bridgepoint has not yet taken its initial referral for DMD. This page is public because we want to build our DMD routing standards, our therapist credentialing checklist, and our initial co-branded caregiver resources together with Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) and the clinicians who already do this work. If you are one of those clinicians, please tell us what "prepared" should mean before we match a therapist to a patient on the platform.
Building a DMD-ready therapist network is the whole point.
If you are a therapist, a clinician mentor, an advocacy organization, or a family with lived experience, we want your input on what preparedness should look like.
